Is nipple piercing OK with breast implants?

e-mail question:
I am considering getting my nipples pierced and your web site has been very helpful. I understand now more about how to take care of them. The only question that I still have is if it is okay to pierce breast that have implants like mine. I am worried about infection and how much of a risk factor it is to get infection.

e-mail reply:
If the implants are behind the chest muscles then the risks are probably similar to normal.

However if the implants are within the breast tissue and in front of the muscles, then if you get an infection the infection could spread around the implants and this could lead to serious trouble - scarring, loss of the implant, serious illness.

In the majority of cases there will be no trouble but there is no guarantee. Your cosmetic surgeon may be able to advise on prophylactic antibiotics at the time of the procedure and for some time afterwards.

Choose a good piercer - find someone who belongs to the Association of Professional Piercers or maybe your doctor can do it after taking instructions from me on technique.
