I am worried about STD's with tongue piercings...

e-mail question:
I am a 19 year old female who enjoys performing oral sex on my mate. Will a tongue piercing prohibit me from doing so? I undertand tongue piercings have been nicknamed "sex toys" because of that reason but I am worried about STD's and infections. I know I am monogamous, but there is no proof he is as well.

e-mail reply:
In essence a fresh tongue piercing will act as a portal into your blood stream of STD's like syphilis, gonorrhoea, the hepatitis viruses and HIV. When it has healed it is much less likely to admit diseases, but no one really knows how safe it really is. Still one of the joys of tongue piercing is the extra fun it gives in sex play.

One way to make sex without condoms safer is for both partners to be tested by a doctor. It is quite common here in Australia for women to demand an HIV and blood tests from a partner before having unprotected sex. It is much easier to trust your partner if you have both been tested. That is my most practical suggestion. If your partner does not want a test, then why not?
