I have an under-active thyroid...

e-mail question:
I am considering getting my tongue pierced but I have a question that I thought you, being a doctor, could answer. I have an under-active thyroid which I take 0.075 mg of Levoxyl daily to treat. Will this in any way afffect my decision to get my tongue pierced? Given my thyroid condition, do you think that it is wise for me to have it done?

e-mail reply:
I do not believe there is an issue with you being on Levoxyl or having an underactive thyroid. However if you have had any recent surgery on the neck (such as thyroid surgery) then you should not have this done as it might theoretically increase the risk of post operative infection.
