What's wrong with peroxide?

e-mail question:
I had my tongue pierced on Friday and have been using peroxide ever since. What is your reasoning for not using peroxide and do I need to stop using it?

e-mail reply:
Peroxide unhibits the production by fibroblasts of collagen, the fundamental building block of healing tissue. It therefore slows healing. I suggest you rely on frequent salt water mouthwashes, and Listerine perhaps twice a day.
