What is granulation tissue?

e-mail question:
What exactly is "granulation tissue" ? I've never heard of that before. So are you saying this isn't a big deal and it should go away? I don't want this thing growing around my ring, it looks weird.

e-mail reply:
Granulation tissue is an overgrowth of healing tissue that has only a very thin lining of skin. It weeps and bleeds easily.
Keloid on the other hand has very thick tough skin. Granulation tissue is temporary and fixable, keloid may be permanent and is very resistant to treatment.
